Assalam oalaikum,
The angels have been assigned with different duties by Allah. The angels perform their duties assiduously. Some people have a wrong notion about angels that they can commit mistakes. The angels are flawless creations and they can never err. This can be verified in chapter#6, Al-Anam, verse#61.
He is the irresistible, (watching) from above over His worshippers, and He sets guardians over you. At length, when death approaches one of you, Our angels take his soul, and they never fail in their duty.
Angels act as Allah’s messengers and convey his message to the humanity. This has been mentioned in Chapter#42, Ash-shura, verse #51.
It is not fitting for a man that Allah should speak to him except by inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by the sending of a messenger to reveal, with Allah.s permission, what Allah wills: for He is Most High, Most Wise.
The angel named Hazrat Izraeel (A.S.) is assigned with the task of death. He takes away life of human beings on the orders of Allah. Many angels work under him. This can be verified in the Quran.surah sajdah verse number 11
Say: "The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall ye be brought back to your Lord."
The angels can also beat up people to punish them. This has been mentioned in chapter#8, Al-Anfal, verse#12.
Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them."
The fact that angels cause lightening in the sky has been mentioned in chapter13, Ar-Rad, verse#13.
Nay, thunder repeateth His praises, and so do the angels, with awe: He flingeth the loud-voiced thunder-bolts, and therewith He striketh whomsoever He will..yet these (are the men) who (dare to) dispute about Allah, with the strength of His power (supreme)!
Angels have been assigned with certain duties in the hell. This has been mentioned in chapter#,74, Al-Muddathir verse#31.
And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this ?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.
The angels can teach also. This has been verified in chapter#53, An-Najm, verse#5.
